The Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase: Don’t Follow Her Into the Woods

Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase standing on a dark, misty forest path with completely black eyes.
Don’t follow her into the woods.

ou hear a child screaming somewhere in the woods.

Not laughing.

Not playing.

Screaming.

You stop on the trail and listen.

There it is again.

A little girl.

She sounds frightened.

Maybe hurt.

So you do what most people would do.

You go looking for her.

The trees grow thicker as you follow the cries. The path disappears behind you. Branches scrape against your clothes as you call out, asking where she is.

Then suddenly…

the screaming stops.

The woods go quiet.

You stand there listening, wondering where the child went.

And that’s when you realize someone is standing behind you.

You turn.

A little girl is only a few feet away.

She can’t be more than ten years old.

Her hands are covering her face.

You ask if she’s okay.

You ask if she was the one screaming.

Slowly, the little girl lowers her hands.

And you see her eyes.

No blue.

No brown.

No green.

Not even the whites.

They’re completely black.

Welcome to Cannock Chase.

Something Strange Lives in Cannock Chase

Cannock Chase stretches across Staffordshire in England, a landscape of woodland, heath, winding trails, and thick stands of trees.

During the day, it’s the kind of place where people walk their dogs, ride bicycles, take their children hiking, and disappear into the woods for a few peaceful hours.

But Cannock Chase has another reputation.

For decades, stories of strange encounters have collected around these woods.

People have reported mysterious lights in the sky.

Large cats have supposedly prowled between the trees.

There are stories of werewolves.

Even a bizarre creature known as the Pig-Man has become part of Cannock Chase folklore.

But one of the most disturbing things reportedly seen there doesn’t look like a monster.

She looks like a little girl.

At least…

until you see her eyes.

The Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase

Black-Eyed Children have been reported in different parts of the world.

The stories often follow a familiar pattern.

Someone encounters one or more unusually pale children.

Something about them immediately feels wrong.

Their behavior is strange.

Their voices may sound unnatural.

And then the witness notices their eyes.

Completely black.

In many Black-Eyed Children legends, the children appear outside homes or vehicles and ask to be let inside. They may insist that they need help, a ride, or permission to use a phone.

But the Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase is different.

She doesn’t knock on your door.

She doesn’t ask to come inside.

You go to her.

Witnesses describe hearing a child crying, screaming, calling for help…

or sometimes giggling somewhere among the trees.

They follow the sound.

And that’s when they find her.

Or perhaps…

that’s when she finds them.

The 1982 Black-Eyed Child Encounter

One of the earliest stories associated with Cannock Chase reportedly occurred in the summer of 1982.

According to paranormal writer Lee Brickley, his aunt was eighteen years old at the time and regularly spent evenings on Cannock Chase with friends.

One evening, shortly before dark, she heard something disturbing.

A little girl was calling for help.

She followed the sound until she reached a dirt track and spotted a child, reportedly around six to eight years old, running away from her.

The girl was calling for her mother.

Naturally, the teenager went after her.

She followed the child deeper toward an area where the trees and undergrowth became increasingly dense.

Then the little girl stopped.

She turned around.

And looked directly at her.

That’s when the teenager saw her eyes.

They were completely black.

The girl then turned and disappeared deeper into the woodland.

According to Brickley’s account, his aunt didn’t follow her.

A search was reportedly made for the mysterious child.

No little girl was found.

For years, the story remained part of Cannock Chase’s growing collection of strange tales.

Then, more than three decades later…

the Black-Eyed Child returned.

The Black-Eyed Child Returns

In 2014, reports of the mysterious girl suddenly attracted attention again.

One encounter involved a woman visiting Cannock Chase with her daughter in the Birches Valley area.

They heard screaming.

It sounded like a child in distress.

The woman and her daughter ran toward the sound, trying to find whoever needed help.

But they couldn’t find anyone.

Eventually they stopped.

Then the woman turned around.

A little girl was standing behind her.

She appeared to be around ten years old.

Her hands covered her eyes.

The woman asked if she was okay.

She asked if she had been the one screaming.

The girl lowered her hands.

Her eyes were completely black.

No visible iris.

No white.

Just black.

The terrified mother grabbed her daughter.

And when she looked back…

the strange girl had disappeared.

The description was disturbingly similar to the story from decades earlier.

A child in the woods.

Cries for help.

Someone follows.

Then the eyes.

But that wasn’t the only encounter being reported around Cannock Chase.

The Giggling Girl in the Woods

Not everyone who encounters the Black-Eyed Child reportedly hears screaming.

Sometimes…

she laughs.

Another account from 2014 involved a couple walking their dog near Stile Cop on Cannock Chase.

After entering the woodland, they heard the sound of a little girl giggling.

Then a child appeared on the path ahead of them.

She was tiny—reportedly no more than about three feet tall.

And once again, something was wrong with her eyes.

They were dark.

Empty.

The couple also described the girl’s head as tilted strangely to one side.

She didn’t immediately disappear.

She reportedly stood there staring at them for several minutes.

Then she ran toward a dense group of trees.

The woman wanted to follow.

Her husband didn’t.

Whatever they’d just seen, he apparently had no interest in chasing it deeper into Cannock Chase.

They left.

Considering the stories surrounding these woods…

that may have been a very good decision.

Don’t Follow the Black-Eyed Child

There’s one detail running through several Cannock Chase stories that I find particularly unsettling.

The child draws people toward her.

Sometimes she screams.

Sometimes she cries.

Sometimes she calls for help.

Sometimes witnesses hear giggling.

But the result is often the same.

Someone leaves the safety of the path and follows.

Farther into the woods.

Toward thicker trees.

Toward places where it becomes harder to see what’s ahead—or find your way back.

Paranormal investigator Lee Brickley has said that reports he collected frequently involved the child seemingly leading witnesses toward potentially dangerous situations. He told the Express & Star in 2014 that he’d investigated several similar accounts from people claiming to have encountered the girl.

And that changes the story.

Because perhaps the screaming isn’t coming from a frightened child who needs help.

Perhaps it’s bait.

You hear a little girl crying alone in the woods.

Every instinct tells you to find her.

To help her.

So you follow.

Exactly as you’re supposed to.

Is She a Black-Eyed Kid—or Something Else?

The Cannock Chase encounters resemble stories of Black-Eyed Children, but there are some important differences.

Most traditional Black-Eyed Children stories involve strangers appearing unexpectedly at someone’s home, car, or another private place.

They want something from you.

Usually permission.

Let us inside.

The Cannock Chase child doesn’t seem particularly interested in being invited anywhere.

She already has somewhere she wants you to go.

The woods.

And unlike many Black-Eyed Children encounters, witnesses sometimes describe the Cannock Chase figure as disappearing suddenly.

That has led to several different ideas about what people might be encountering.

Some call her a ghost.

Others have described her as demonic.

And some simply call her the Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase.

Whatever she is, the stories tend to agree on one thing.

When you see those black eyes…

don’t follow her.

Why Cannock Chase?

Maybe the strangest thing about the Black-Eyed Child is that she isn’t the only unexplained creature associated with Cannock Chase.

Not even close.

Stories from the area include mysterious big cats, UFO sightings, werewolves, ghostly figures, and the infamous Pig-Man.

Local newspapers have described Cannock Chase as a hotspot for reports of unusual and paranormal activity.

It’s the sort of place where one strange story seems to attract another.

But the Black-Eyed Child stands apart because there’s nothing obviously monstrous about her at first.

If you saw a werewolf between the trees, you’d run.

If you encountered something half-human and half-pig, you probably wouldn’t follow it into the woods.

But a little girl crying for her mother?

You might.

And perhaps that’s exactly what makes her dangerous.

The Crying Stops

Imagine walking Cannock Chase as evening begins to settle over the woods.

You’re almost back to the car when you hear something behind you.

A child crying.

You stop.

Listen.

There it is again.

Farther back among the trees.

You know the stories.

You know what people say lives here.

So you keep walking.

The crying gets louder.

You tell yourself someone could genuinely need help.

Then you hear a little girl’s voice.

“Help.”

You turn around.

There’s nobody on the path.

The voice comes again.

Closer.

“Help me.”

Maybe that’s when you call someone.

Maybe you shout that you’re getting help.

But whatever you do…

don’t leave the path.

Because according to the stories of Cannock Chase, if you follow that voice into the woods, you might eventually find the little girl you’re looking for.

And once she lifts her head…

you may wish you hadn’t.

More Black-Eyed Children Stories

What Happens If You Let Them In?

Most Black-Eyed Children encounters end with the same warning:

Don’t let them inside.

But what happens when someone does?

Stories from people who claim to have allowed the mysterious children into their homes describe frightening consequences—and suggest there may be a reason they always seem to need permission to enter.

The Black-Eyed Children

They appear late at night.

At your door.

Beside your car.

Sometimes they say they’re lost. Sometimes they need to use a phone. Sometimes they simply ask to come inside.

At first, they look like ordinary children.

Then you notice their eyes.

Completely black.

And whatever you do…

don’t invite them in.

Black-Eyed Adults

Children aren’t the only ones reportedly seen with those impossible black eyes.

Far less common stories describe encounters with Black-Eyed Adults—strange men and women whose eyes share the same completely black appearance associated with Black-Eyed Children.

And just like the children, witnesses often describe an immediate and overwhelming feeling that something is terribly wrong.

Free Story Friday: The Children Who Knock

What happens when the Black-Eyed Children stop being a legend and appear outside your door?

The Children Who Knock is an original horror story inspired by the Black-Eyed Children legend and one simple warning:

Whatever they say, don’t let them inside.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of things in the woods that make noise after dark.

Animals move through the undergrowth.

Branches snap.

Wind moves through the trees.

Sometimes sounds carry farther than you’d expect.

But a child screaming for help is different.

It’s almost impossible to ignore.

And perhaps that’s why the legend of the Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase works so well.

The story doesn’t begin with someone doing something foolish.

It begins with someone doing something kind.

They hear a frightened child.

They go looking for her.

And somewhere among the trees, the crying stops.

A little girl appears.

She covers her face with her hands.

Then she slowly lowers them.

So if you’re ever walking through Cannock Chase and hear a child calling from somewhere beyond the path…

you might want to remember the stories.

Especially if the voice seems to be leading you deeper into the woods.

Because the child you find may not need your help.

She may have been waiting for you.
